UAP Holds 36th National Convention

Some one thousand seven hundred (1,700) architects from all over the Philippines trooped to the SM Exhibition Center (SMX) in Pasay City to attend the 36th National Convention of the United Architects of the Philippines held on April 22 – 24, 2010, with delegates from chapters based in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – KSA Western Region, KSA Eastern Province, and KSA Riyadh – also in attendance. The KSA Eastern Province Chapter was led by Chapter President Arch. Errol Pineda and Arch. Liyo Cefre, member of the Board of Directors.

Twenty seven (27) Continuing Professional Development (CDP) seminars were conducted by both Filipino and foreign resources speakers. Most of the seminars were on green architecture, which was in line with the Convention’s theme “UAP at the Forefront of Green Building & Sustainability.”

Architect Ramon Mendoza of the UAP New Manila Chapter was elected UAP National President, while Arch. Michael Ang was re-elected as National Executive Vice-President. Others elected were: Arch. Rey Gabitan, Secretary General; Arch. Dondon De Guzman, National Treasurer; and Arch. Lito Soriano, National Auditor. Rounding out the National Board are Arch. Richard Garcia, VP for Area A; Arch. Sonny Rosal, VP for Area B; Arch. Benjamin Aliño for Area C; and Arch. Jemma Semaña, VP for Area D.

UAP Angeles City Chapter, UAP Rizal Taytay Chapter, and UAP Makati Chapter were adjudged Best Chapters for Groups I, II, & III, respectively. Group I consists of Chapters with 30-55 active members, Group II with 56-80 active members, and Group III with more than 80 active members.

Mr. Ted Failon, radio commentator and news anchor of the ABS-CBN network, received a plaque of recognition for his role in the success of the “Kapamilya, Shower Na!” a project which provided transportable shower modules to victims of Typhoon Ondoy who lost their homes and were housed in evacuation centers. Mr. Peter Musngi received the plaque on behalf of the network. “Kapamilya, Shower Na!” is a joint-venture of the UAP Cavite Chapter and ABS-CBN.

The Convention Exhibits (Conex) was held from April 22 to April 25.
