The construction of the Home Economics Room of the Calaanan Elementary School in Calaanan, Bongabon, Nueva Ecija kicked off UAP Diliman’s Rehabilitation of Schoolrooms Project for FY 2007-2008.

The Home Economics Room, to be used by the Grades 4 to 6 students and teachers, was upgraded to be an annex to the main school building; it now has a concrete floor, painted walls, doors and windows, a toilet with an innovative water tank and distribution system using drums and pipes.

The need for the rehabilitation was brought to the attention of UAP Diliman by the teachers who heard about the assistance the Chapter extended for the rehabilitation of schoolrooms in Barangays Digmala and Arriendo.

The positive outcome of the program is not confined to the walls of the classroom, and the multiplier effect of the initial efforts of the Chapter in soliciting materials is now evident through the support of more local donors; education and technology transfer among volunteers; active participation of community stakeholders and improved community relations; and participation of the local government and attached government agencies.

Bongabon Mayor Amelia Gamilla joined the members of the community – parents, teachers, students, and volunteers from the 702nd Infantry Brigade in the turnover rites held on October 18, 2007. The Diliman Chapter was represented by President Minnie Rosel, Director for Outreach Programs Malu Gutierrez, Chapter Secretary Chris Layusa, and Albert Rosel.

After the turnover ceremonies at the Calaanan Elementary School, the Chapter representatives were shown three other public schools requesting assistance in the rehabilitation of their schoolrooms. These are the Bantug Elementary School, also in Bongabon, and Platero Elementary School and Bravo Elementary School in the nearby town of General Mamerto Natividad, also in Nueva Ecija.
